Aurora Spirit Distillery

The world's northernmost distillery, home of Bivrost

Their Story

How we came to work with Aurora Spirit Distillery.

Tucked into a bay at Årøybukt on the Lyngen fjord, beneath some of the most dramatic peaks in the Arctic, sits the northernmost distillery in the world. Under the Bivrost name — the shimmering bridge between the world of humans and the home of the gods in Norse mythology, long linked in the North to the aurora — Aurora Spirit produces Arctic single malt whisky, gin, vodka and aquavit, all made with glacier water from the Lyngen Alps towering directly above the stills. The setting has a story of its own: the distillery stands on a former Second World War military site, and the army's underground tunnels now serve as cask cellars where the whisky matures slowly in the cold Arctic air. Visitors are welcomed year round — from the Arctic Whisky Experience, a guided tour finishing with three tastings, to cask sampling in the tunnels and an exclusive visit hosted by co-founder Tor Petter W. Christensen. There is even a Bivrost experience in Tromsø city for travellers short on time. Aurora Husky and Aurora Spirit share more than a first name. Both are built by locals in Troms who believe the Arctic is best experienced through the people who live here. We spend years training husky teams; they spend years maturing whisky in Arctic tunnels — the same patience, the same pride in doing things properly. And a bottle of Arctic whisky or gin, made with glacier water from the mountains you just travelled beneath, is a piece of the North you can actually take home.

Huskies, mountains and a warming dram

Spend the day with us at Aurora Husky, driving your own team of eager huskies through the winter landscape. Then set aside a day for the Lyngen side of the fjord: tour the northernmost distillery in the world, walk the wartime tunnels, and taste spirits born of glacier water and Arctic patience. Our partner Camp Troll runs silent electric snowmobile tours on the same side of the fjord — and if the evening sky is clear, you might even see the original Bivrost, the aurora itself, arcing over the Lyngen Alps on your way back.

Aurora Spirit Distillery FAQs

Bivrost comes from Norse mythology: it is the shimmering bridge between Midgard, the world of humans, and Asgard, the home of the gods. In Northern Norway the name has long been associated with the northern lights, which makes it a fitting name for spirits distilled under the aurora.
Yes. The distillery lies in Årøybukt on the Lyngen fjord and can be reached from Tromsø by road via Nordkjosbotn or by the scenic route with the Breivikeidet–Svensby ferry. Aurora Spirit also runs a Bivrost experience in Tromsø city for visitors who cannot make the trip out to Lyngen.
Options range from the Arctic Whisky Experience, a guided tour of about one hour with three tastings, to a Select Cask Experience sampling spirits straight from the barrel, and an exclusive Founder's Experience hosted by co-founder Tor Petter W. Christensen.
Bivrost produces award-winning Arctic single malt whisky, gin infused with Arctic botanicals, vodka and aquavit, all crafted with glacier water from the Lyngen Alps at 69 degrees north.
